The Choir Project, with Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion, 5-9 December

Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion lead a project to create a performance in 5 days, for a choir of 20 dancers. We will work intensively on a series of scores for movement, words and music, looking at composition and performance, and asking always how a dance might be made and what it could communicate to somebody watching. The resulting event will be presented on the final day, Friday 9th December: come along to Siobhan Davies Studios at 6pm to watch us (free, drop-in)!

"I decided to apply for London Contemporary Dance School because I had a lot of respect for the faculty, their range of backgrounds and specialisms. I also liked the school's connection with the professional dance world: The Robin Howard Dance Theatre, Artist Development, Richard Alston Company and the choreographers who work here, all in the same building. Having done classes at The Place over the years, and taken part in Resolution! I already felt familiar with the environment and keen to become a further part of it.

The Advanced Dance Studies course offered the possibility of combining modules from all the three main specialisms: performance, choreography and dance education (the three areas that constitute the portfolio career of many dance artists). I had wanted to apply to a postgraduate course at LCDS before but was put off by having to 'choose' between these three strands. ADS was exactly the course I had been waiting for and I chose modules in all three areas, to help me grow as a dancer, choreographer and teacher"....

Jose Campos is a choreographer and performer working in London with an interest in visual arts and fashion. One of his recent works is a collection of dancers video portraits.

"A work in progress, ‘Spare Rib’ focused on the dialogue between music and dance, exploring the ‘body- instrument’ through collaboration between dancers and musicians and it achieved exactly that. The gifted musician played effortlessly to the movement being performed by the three female dancers, even performing pedestrian movements himself." Guest Artist at DANCE CHALLENGE Cadogan Hall London

Scarlett Perdereau is amongst dance artists invited to present their work during the Dance Challenge™ youth dance competition at Cadogan Hall, Chelsea. She performs a solo adaptation of Rear Window (She, Moves, Me) on 8th July and presents a new work-in-progress with a company of 4 dancers at the final night on the 18th.

Dance Challenge™ is an event which recognises and awards the creativity and talent of young people between the ages of 5 and 26. It runs in the form of a competition where groups and competitors are awarded trophies, free dance training and performance opportunities.

The guest artists invited to perform at these events act as ambassadors of dance and inspiration for the next dance generation.

Workshop for 14-17 year-old dance students, Sydney, Australia

Last December on a visit to Australia, I was invited to lead an 'incursion' for 14-17 year-old dance students at St Catherine’s School for Girls in Sydney. The teacher in charge was a dancer I met in London on a performance project and who participated in my R &D for Rear Window. She found my approach of technique and choreography would be stimulating to bring to her class. The idea of the 'incursion' was to take the pupils on a journey, with workshop tasks that would challenge, inspire and ultimately help them with their dance composition assignment.

Feedback from teacher Melissa Cooper:

"I was reading my dance student's journals and they've all written such great things about the Workshop with you. (...) They really loved the piece of choreography we showed them - I think they enjoyed the fact that we didn't use accompaniment and the breathing and body percussion had a lot of impact. (...) I wish you could come and teach my kids all the time - they'd be pro's in no time!!"

Report and feedback from students:

"We had a fantastic incursion today with Scarlett. She had a beautiful body which could dance and move freely without restriction or self doubt. This is what I have learnt from Scarlett. I have learnt to trust my own ideas and my own feelings and to go with it. I have also learnt from her to not “sugar coat” anything. Raw, original, self expressed movement is more interesting than over-emphasized movements. Scarlett has taught me that dance needs to be interesting, it can be beautiful, but it does not have to be. But it must intrigue the eye."

"We started the class with a warm up (...). We worked with our own breath and were able to complete the moving stretches in our own time. Another thing I enjoyed about this workshop was the emphasis on the breath. Scarlett emphasized the importance of the breath in working with the dancer to execute more feeling and expression. (...) I really enjoyed each combination Scarlett taught us because they all included lots of exercises to warm up different parts of the body."

"After this we had to collapse freely to the ground. I was a little nervous to fall but I did. Once we were on the floor we had to have our eyes closed and had to find a way to get up. The only challenge was we were only allowed to use our exhale to move. I found this a little challenging at first as I was trying to think of interesting ways to move, however once we practiced this exercise a few more times I found a more natural way of moving, unique to my body. I am so impressed with [other pupil's name]’s unique movement. She was able to let herself go and was able to feel her own body and how it wanted to move. It looked great."

"Once we finished some improvisation we showed Scarlett our core performance dance. We let her manipulate the dance by adding a cannon and using different music. We were able to add dynamics for variation and added accents to the movements. We then went into pairs and were given instructions to perform the dance. (...) That was fun, yet challenging."

"After we played around with the dance we were able to watch a piece performed by Miss Cooper and Scarlett [extract from Rear Window/She, Moves, Me]. (...) I was so impressed by this piece. I really enjoyed the lack of music and the use of body percussion. It allowed the audience to get involved with the dance as it was interesting and intriguing. This dance has given me inspiration for my own composition dance. I loved it how they let each other dance separately however they did the same movements. It was really effective."

Movement and Dance in Youth and Community Work - Workshop

I lead a one-day session at Turning Point Community College, Lewisham, for students on the Diploma in Higher Education in youth and community work.

As part of their course, the students are placed in a range of agencies from mental health, to youth clubs, pensioner's groups, refugees, family learning centres, etc. They come to face issues and community challenges with a variety of groups, and this workshop was to provide them with certain tools to help them in their engagement with these groups.

I was given much freedom in the planning and delivering of the workshop. The session explored the dimension of movement/dance/performance as a creative vehicle to foster community cohesion and transformation, and to stimulate and inspire action and motivation amongst groups and communities. Participants got the chance to experience first hand the impact of dance/movement, and to learn a range of activities, excercises and techniques through which they could begin to incorporate these artistic mediums into their own professional practices.

It was a packed-full session, involving movement-based games as well as reflective and critical analysis. It was quite a challenge as students were going through the pressure of work placements and essay deadlines, and we were confined to a rather cluttered meeting room! But the course leader was genuinely pleased with my input and "feedback was positive - students felt they got good techniques to use with their own groups".

Commissioned Performance at the UKPHA Annual Conference

Scarlett Perdereau was commissioned to create and perform a dance piece for the UKPHA annual conference at Telford International Centre, West Midlands. The short choreography (a 15mins duet performed with Eva Voulgari) offered delegates a taste of contemporary dance as well as being the opening event of the conference.

The day was attended by local Arts Council officers and various health and community professionals who discussed how performing arts bring out the best in the community and benefit public health. Other participating artists included Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company and Chicken Shed Theatre Company.

First work performed at Barcelona's Marató de l’Espectacle

Scarlett Perdereau will be performing in her first piece of choreography Horos Meros at the Marató de l’Espectacle, Barcelona's greatest annual festival of performing arts, on June 4th.

The work is a short duet on the relation between public place and private space. Scarlett Perdereau and dancer Eva Voulgari will perform on the big stage of the Teatro Mercat de les Flors. Music is by kind authorisation of Birgir Sigurðsson, whose work includes composing for Iceland Dance Company and collaborations with Björk.
